These pictures from the Vision-Aid (Vizag, India) center are from the recently concluded Vision
Rehabilitation camp for the school children of the Parvatipuram school district of Andhra Pradesh , India

In July 2005, Vision-Aid Vizag Center conducted a special evaluation camp for the CDC
(Community Development Center) in our area, to evaluate and help visually impaired school
children from Salur. At that first camp, 23 school children of Salur with vision problems were
brought to our center and treated over a two-day period. This special camp was a great success
and generated much interest both via word of mouth and in the media in all the surrounding
districts.
Due to this CDC has asked its sister unit JKS (Jana Kalyan Samakhya) of Parvatipuram to avail our
services Parvatipuram requested us and we agreed to treat 40 students in two batches. The first
batch of 22 came to us on Aug 18. And 19.
The 22 students accompanied by teacher escorts landed in Vizag and stayed for 2 days. While the
group managed their own travel, accommodation and food Vision-Aid provided free low vision
evaluations + 50% subsidy on all assistive devices including spectacles. The cost of evaluation
(and related center expenses) and devices subsidy were made possible by grants and financial
support of donors.
We arranged Ophthalmologist examination on 18th and Optometrist examination on 19th. All 22
were evaluated first for a preliminary eye screening.
14 required spec ts, which were fabricated and delivered at 50% subsidized prices
10 students also need hand held magnification devices which are ordered by us and when
received will be sent to the schools (also at 50% of actual cost).
We gave 20 sets of special notebooks square/ wide -ruled free to all children who had advanced
vision loss to facilitate easier writing in classroom studies.
With help of the spectacles and devices, 14 persons are now able to see clearly and 10 of them
able to read and see blackboard independently for the first time. The schools and parents were
made aware of special needs of their vision-impaired children and future follow up.
The CDC/JKS organizations, teachers and parents were very grateful and promised to put to good
use, both our services and devices.
Media interest was generated and the Local TV station ran a special coverage on this camp in
their prime time news bulletins on 19th and 20 th August. Through this, our services are gaining
improved visibility.
We are planning the Parvatipuram –Phase II batch on Sep 11, 2005. A detailed report and
photographs of that will be posted in due course.
We sincerely thank all our donors and supporters for their help in making this valuable
service possible
