The Production

“Shakthi’ is a unique thematic concept by Shri Madurai R Muralidaran. Shakthi means “power” in Sanskrit and is considered as the divine energy underlying Nature’s manifestation. The concept of Shakthi generally refers to the dynamic force that is responsible for creation, maintenance, and destruction of the universe. It is often identified as female energy because Shakthi is responsible for creation, as mothers bring about birth. Per Hindu philosophy, Shakthi stimulates Shiva, the masculine passive energy in the form of consciousness, to create Ardhanarishvara, an iconic form symbolizing the balance and equality of both energies. Shakthi may be personified as the gentle and benevolent, as the terrifying force destroying evil, or as the warrior who conquers forces that threaten the stability of the universe.

In this unique production, Guru Muralidaran has portrayed the manifestation of the female energy, Shakthi, as an empowering element through a series of eight unique compositions. Starting with an invocation and offering of flowers, Shakthi is then celebrated as one who empowers us through the gift of knowledge. The mood is then set for intense yearning through a Jathiswaram, followed by a portrayal of the Irrepressible Spirit of a Young Maiden. The journey continues with two kavithuvams that pay tribute to the female spirit in its most mortal and divine manifestations: first a tribute to Motherhood - the nurturing presence that underlies every mortal life and then to the divine Universal Mother as the epitome of life force that drives the entire universe. The cornerstone of this presentation is a varnam, urging each woman to “stand with her head held high” and conquer the world on her own! Guru Muralidaran concludes with a thillana in praise of Shakthi in the form of the goddess of physical and spiritual prosperity.
