Aravind Eye Hospital Coimbatore
Aravind Eye Hospital (AEH) in Coimbatore is dedicated to eradicating visual impairment and blindness. Since its inauguration in 1997, AEH Coimbatore has been offering high quality eye care services to all patients.
Since January 2024, Vision-Aid has been proud to partner with AEH Coimbatore. This collaboration enables us to extend our reach, providing comprehensive rehabilitation, thereby enhancing the impact on vision health and quality of life.
Highlighted activities in 2024:
This quarter AEH Coimbatore has seen over 1100 beneficiaries by offering over 1200 sessions of interventions. The focus areas of service include has been early intervention services and comprehensive low vision assessment and distribution of assistive devices.
Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) Initiative
To support children with Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI), they have allocated a dedicated room for early intervention and vision therapy sessions. These sessions, conducted five days a week, provide specialized attention and resources to significantly improve the quality of life for these children.
Research Activity
An ongoing research project titled “A Prospective, Controlled Pilot Study to Assess the Feasibility of Assessment of Functional Vision in Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI)” is in line in collaboration with experts from Aravind Eye Hospital and Smith Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, San Francisco, USA. This multidisciplinary approach aims to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for CVI.
Research Activity
On March 27, 2024, the center conducted a low-vision screening camp at Ramakrishna Vivekananda School for Children with Special Needs in Coimbatore. Seventy-one children were screened, receiving comprehensive evaluations including vision assessment, refraction, functional vision assessment, ophthalmic examination, trials with low vision devices, and rehabilitation guidance for parents.
This screening camp highlighted the commitment to improving the functional vision and overall quality of life for children with special needs.
On 9th April 2024, the center offered clinical examination to students referred through Help the Blind foundation. The students benefitted by the detailed clinical and Low vision evaluation.
Future scope:
- The center focuses on building infrastructure to establish a computer training center for the visually impaired.
- Increase recommendations of individuals with visual impairments for advanced skill-based training through Vision-Aid’s online training program.
