Sitapur Eye Hospital is a tertiary eye care institute in Uttar Pradesh, India, serving the community since 1926. The mission is to eradicate blindness and provide standard eye care through a committed team of professionals.
Vision-Aid is delighted to collaborate with Sitapur Eye Hospital since July 2023, establishing the Sitapur Eye Hospital – Vision-Aid Resource Center. This center aims to benefit individuals with vision-related disabilities by providing comprehensive support and rehabilitation services.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2024:
In 2024, Sitapur Eye Hospital offered 500 sessions /interventions to more than 400 beneficiaries with an overall increase in services since collaborating with Vision-Aid including early intervention, comprehensive low vision assessment, orientation and mobility, computer and visual skills training and education and counseling, and assistive devices.

SUCCESS STORY
The center is thrilled to share an inspiring success story of a visually impaired schoolgirl. Despite receiving a disability certificate in 2016, she lacked proper rehabilitative care, leading to depression and impacting her studies and daily life. Her turning point came when she visited Sitapur Eye Hospital, where she received comprehensive evaluation and essential tools like corrective glasses and a portable video magnifier. These tools not only enhanced her vision slightly but also greatly improved her ability to read and learn. Her school supported her by providing a scribe and enabling her to use the magnifier with digital devices, which boosted her academic performance.
Additionally, she learned about specialized courses at Shakuntala University in Kanpur, opening up further educational opportunities. The interventions by the Vision-Aid Resource Center transformed her outlook, bringing new hope and positivity into her life. Her mother expressed deep gratitude for the significant change observed in her daughter, highlighting the importance of accessible vision rehabilitation services in transforming lives.
LOW VISION DEVICE DISTRIBUTION EVENT ON JULY 5TH, 2024:
With the support of Vision-Aid, 15 smart canes, and 5 smartphones were distributed at an event organized by Sitapur Eye Hospital to individuals in need. The event also served as a platform to raise awareness about low vision through Rangoli, engaging hospital staff and patients, and district authorities. Furthermore, it provided an opportunity to gather feedback and experiences from low vision patients and their parents regarding the impact of these initiatives on their quality of life.
Participants expressed gratitude for the initiative. With newfound confidence, they are now equipped to effectively use these devices in their daily lives.

Vision-Aid Driving Transformational Change in Low Vision Treatment
For many people, vision disability still presents a significant obstacle that influences their general quality of life, education, and degree of freedom. Vision-Aid is committed to addressing these challenges via awareness campaigns, assistive technology, and programs of its resource centers across India. Vision-Aid helps significantly to close the disparity for people with vision challenges by providing access to necessary resources.

Vision-Aid makes great efforts to provide people with vision disability the skills they need to negotiate daily life more effectively. To guarantee assistive tools and specialized training reach individuals in need, we work with specialists, community groups, and hospitals. Among its main projects is the sponsoring of low vision devices, which significantly improves visual skills and independence.
Vision Aid Sponsored Low Vision Devices with The Help of Sitapur Hospital
At an event held on December 20, 2024, at the Sitapur Eye Hospital, Vision-Aid distributed low vision devices & spectacles to deserving beneficiaries. This program was meant to help people with low vision have a better quality of life by giving them the required assistive equipment to restore functional sight and independence.
Purpose of the Initiative
With the distribution of 88 assistive devices, the initiative sought to improve the quality of life for people with limited eyesight so, allowing them to do everyday activities on their own. It guaranteed fair access to necessary visual aids irrespective of socioeconomic background and taught recipients the advantages of early adoption. The initiative also promoted vision rehabilitation, therefore encouraging society’s inclusion and involvement in events. Vision-Aid worked with Sitapur Eye Hospital and the Basic Siksha Adhikari (BSA) office to set up low-vision screening camps to identify the beneficiaries.
Important Activities during the Event
The event centered on providing See TV devices, optical filters, spectacles, and essential low vision solutions. Every beneficiary had pre-screening to ensure they got the best assistive device for their particular disability. Low vision teachers guided participants in a step-by-step manner to utilize the advantages of their equipment during hands-on training sessions.
Interactive seminars also taught caregivers of children, optimal ways to assist people with limited vision, therefore promoting more community involvement. 84 youngsters got free assistance equipment and instruction, greatly enhancing their capacity to carry out daily chores and engage in school. The event effectively increased knowledge of poor vision care and early intervention empowering beneficiaries and motivating their involvement in social and educational environments.
Future Objectives and Long-Term Vision
Vision-Aid is committed to expanding its outreach and implementing innovative solutions to support individuals with visual impairments. Key focus areas include developing comprehensive low vision care training programs, fostering partnerships with hospitals and educational institutions, and leveraging assistive technologies to enhance accessibility.
Additionally, the organization plans to conduct awareness campaigns, early diagnostic screenings, and intervention camps in and around Sitapur. Efforts will also be made to provide career development and vocational training to individuals with vision impairment and help them secure employment and achieve financial independence.
Nidhi Devi – Rising Beyond Limits
Fifteen-year-old Nidhi Devi from Sitapur was born with anophthalmos, a condition that left her without visual development from birth. Yet, despite the challenges she faced, Nidhi’s journey has been defined not by limitations, but by her remarkable determination to learn, grow, and become independent.
Nidhi began her schooling through Braille at a local primary school. While she worked hard, her daily life was filled with difficulties—especially with mobility and navigating unfamiliar spaces. Her turning point came in 2024, when she visited the Vision-Aid Resource center at the Sitapur Eye Hospital, a decision that opened the door to life-changing support.
A Pathway to Independence
At the resource center, Nidhi received comprehensive interventions tailored to her needs:
- Mobility Training:
To help her move safely and confidently, Nidhi underwent systematic mobility training. This empowered her to navigate her surroundings with greater independence. - Smartphone Through the Vision Aid Project:
Through Vision-Aid Resource center Nidhi received a smartphone loaded with assistive applications, along with dedicated training. The device has become a powerful learning tool, enabling her to access information, study independently, and stay connected. - Training With Smart Vision Glasses:
Currently, Nidhi is being trained to use smart vision glasses. She is extremely enthusiastic about learning this new technology, which is expected to further enhance her ability to navigate and interact with the world around her.

With timely intervention and continued support, Nidhi has made remarkable strides:

My Journey of Hope and Independence
My name is Nidhi Devi, a 16-year-old from Sitapur studying in Class 8. I love singing, playing the dholak, and dream of becoming a teacher.
In 2024, I began losing my ability to walk, read, and do daily tasks. I felt frightened and unsure about my future.
My life changed when I visited the Vision-Aid Resource Center at Sitapur Eye Hospital. I received mobility training, a cane that restored my confidence, and a mobile phone with the TalkBack app. I now study using My Books and EasyReader, and I’m learning to use Smart Vision Glasses, which help me experience the world more independently.
Today, I walk on my own, study better, and feel stronger and hopeful again. With Vision-Aid’s support, my dreams feel within reach.

A Clearer Vision, A Brighter Future: Stories of Hope from Vision-Aid Resource Center
In the heart of Sitapur, two young students are discovering that visual impairment doesn’t have to stand in the way of their dreams. Through the dedicated support of the Vision-Aid Resource Center at Sitapur Eye Hospital, Sumit Rawat and Sobhit Kumar are transforming their educational challenges into opportunities for growth and success.
Sumit’s Journey: From Struggle to Confidence
Sumit Rawat, a 15-year-old Class 10 student, has lived with retinal birth defects in both eyes since childhood. These conditions significantly affected his vision, making everyday classroom activities a constant challenge. Despite these obstacles, Sumit never let go of his dream to one day join the police department.
Coming from a humble family where his father works as a farmer and his mother is a homemaker, Sumit is one of five siblings. Interestingly, one of his four siblings, two brothers and two sisters, also experiences similar eye problems, highlighting the genetic nature of their condition.
Because of his visual impairment, Sumit found it extremely difficult to read textbooks and see the blackboard in school. These challenges affected his learning experience and required additional support to help him continue his education effectively. His first step toward finding that support came when he visited Sitapur Eye Hospital, where he was referred to the Vision-Aid Resource Center for low vision management.
After a detailed assessment, Sumit was prescribed power glasses with a grey photochromatic tint to improve visual comfort. The Vision-Aid Resource Center also guided him on environmental modifications to support daily activities, provided information about obtaining a disability certificate, and issued a school recommendation letter enabling him to sit on the first bench for better visibility. He was advised to maintain regular follow-ups to monitor his progress.
Sumit continued his visits diligently. During his second visit, he came prepared with his school bag and shared that he still faced difficulty reading from the blackboard and books. In response, the resource center provided a See-TV optical device, improving his binocular distance vision, along with high addition near vision glasses that made reading books significantly easier. A trial with a digital video magnifier was also conducted to further support near tasks. These interventions brought noticeable improvement in his visual functioning.
During his follow-up visit, Sumit was visibly happy. He shared that he could now read his textbooks comfortably and see the blackboard clearly in class. Beyond improved vision, he gained something even more valuableconfidence. With renewed hope, Sumit feels more determined than ever to pursue his dream career in the police department.
Sobhit’s Path: Aspiring to Heal Others
Twelve-year-old Sobhit Kumar, a 6th-grade student from Sitapur, carries a different dreamhe aspires to become a doctor. Living with genetic conditions causing reduced pigmentation and low vision, Sobhit has faced significant challenges with both his distance and near vision since early childhood.
Due to reduced visual acuity and high light sensitivity, Sobhit struggled to see the classroom board and perform everyday academic tasks. These challenges affected his classroom participation and made learning increasingly difficult. The bright lights in his classroom caused visual discomfort, and the inability to see the board clearly left him falling behind his peers.
Through the Vision-Aid Resource Center at Sitapur Eye Hospital, Sobhit was provided with a See-TV optical device for distance viewing and a Noir filter as a non-optical aid to reduce light sensitivity. He was also advised to sit on the first bench in his classroom to improve board visibilitya simple accommodation that would make a world of difference.
At his follow-up visit, Sobhit reported clearer visibility of the classroom board, reduced visual discomfort, and improved confidence in class participation. The combination of assistive devices and classroom accommodations has made a meaningful difference in his learning experience.
