From Diagnosis to Determination
In 2022, Mast. Muhamad Farhan from Bangladesh completed his 10th standard at a local school in his hometown. That same year, a medical consultation at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, revealed that he had Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), in both eyes. Following this, Farhan was referred to the Vision Enhancement Clinic (VEC) at the Vision-Aid Resource Center for rehabilitation and educational guidance.
This moment became the starting point of a life-changing journey—one that would challenge Farhan yet also uncover his unwavering determination to continue his education.
Discovering a New Path Forward
Recognizing Farhan’s academic potential, the Vision-Aid Resource Center team began exploring alternative educational pathways. Farhan was encouraged to consider continuing his studies.
This suggestion became a powerful turning point. It rekindled hope and gave Farhan a renewed sense of purpose. With courage and trust in the process, he decided to pursue this opportunity, determined to shape his future through education.
Throughout this phase, the Vision-Aid team remained persistent—advocating for Farhan and reaching out to multiple schools to find the right environment for him.
A Breakthrough at Sethubhaskara School
After multiple attempts, a positive response finally arrived. The principal of Sethubhaskara Matriculation Higher Secondary School granted Farhan admission into higher secondary education.
This transformed Farhan’s future. It marked the beginning of a stable academic journey and restored his confidence in what he could achieve.
Building Skills at Vision-Aid’s Vision Enhancement Clinic
Alongside his schooling, Farhan became a regular participant at the Vision Enhancement Clinic (VEC). He received structured training in:
- Orientation and Mobility (O&M)
- Mobile phone usage
- Computer skills
Farhan attended sessions consistently, including on weekends and during school holidays. His dedication helped him build independence, practical skills, and confidence for both academic and everyday tasks.
To ensure equitable access during examinations, Vision-Aid also facilitated scribes for Farhan during assessments.
Academic Excellence Through Perseverance
Farhan’s commitment and hard work soon reflected in his academic results. He successfully completed his 12th standard and secured an impressive third rank in the public examinations.
This achievement stands as a strong example of what becomes possible when determination is supported by the right guidance and resources.
Empowered by Assistive Technology
To further support Farhan’s learning journey, Vision-Aid provided:
- A smartphone
- A Smart Vision Glass (SVG) device
These tools enable Farhan to read, access study materials, stay updated with current affairs, and learn independently—greatly enhancing his confidence and self-reliance.
Looking Ahead: Higher Education Aspirations
Today, Farhan has applied to several colleges in Chennai and aspires to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. He hopes to build a meaningful career and become financially independent.
