To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, several impactful programs were organized by our eye hospital partners at the Vision-Aid resource centers, focusing on empowering individuals with disabilities through awareness, technology, and rehabilitation.
1. Awareness Program at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai
On December 3, 2024, at Madurai, Aravind Eye Hospital’s Vision-Aid resource center hosted a special program under the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”.
Highlights of the event:
- Distribution of assistive tools, including smartphones, white canes, smart vision glasses, signature guides, and video pocket magnifiers, benefiting 30 individuals.
- 15 Smartphones distributed were sponsored through a joint program run by Vision-Aid and the Trees for Life foundation
- An exhibition showcasing low-vision devices and digital technologies was organized.
- Presentations made by rehabilitation specialists on the center’s services and resources.
The event demonstrated how assistive technologies and inclusive practices can drive empowerment and foster sustainable futures for persons with disabilities.
2. Vision Screening Camp at NIEPMD by Sankara Nethralaya
Sankara Nethralaya’s Vision-Aid resource center at Chennai conducted a two-day vision screening camp on December 5th and 6th,at the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD).
Key achievements included:
- 181 individuals were screened; 30 children were prescribed glasses and 28 referred for advanced treatment to the tertiary eye hospital.
- Comprehensive eye examinations, functional vision assessments, and referrals for specialized rehabilitation services were some of the activities carried out.
- Immense appreciation from the community for the thorough and empathetic services delivered.
This program underscored the center’s dedication to empowering individuals with disabilities through accessible and quality healthcare.
3. Low Vision Screening Camp at NFBM Jagruti School for Blind Girls by Community Eye Care Foundation
On December 12, 2024, a low vision screening camp was conducted by the Community Eye care foundation’s Vision-Aid Resource Centre in NFBM Jagruti School for Blind Girls, Alandi, Pune. This initiative focused on girls pursuing school education ranging from 1st to 8th standard who are visually impaired.
Key outcomes included:
- Screening of 51 school girls with visual impairment.
- Need for Assistive devices including 13 optical devices, 2 non-optical aids, 6 electronic magnifiers, and 6 spectacles were identified and these devices will be dispensed to the needy.
This effort highlighted the importance of early intervention and assistive technology in improving the quality of life for visually impaired children.
4. Vision Rehabilitation CME at Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli
A Continuing Medical Education (CME) “Vision Rehabilitation—Current Perspectives” session was held on December 8, 2024, at the Vision-Aid resource center at Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli. The event aimed to enhance healthcare providers’ understanding of vision rehabilitation for various age groups.
Key highlights included:
- Participation by 140 professionals, including doctors, optometrists, and educators.
- A keynote lecture on “Understanding Cerebral Visual Impairment” by Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi.
- The overview of Vision-Aid was presented at the CME under the topic of the role of NGOs in Vision rehabilitation.
- Interactive talks by experts on optical and non-optical rehabilitation methods, digital resources, and employment opportunities for individuals with vision impairments.
- The center’s extensive collection of assistive devices was showcased during the event, highlighting their exceptional capabilities in rehabilitation technologies and digital orientation tools.
The program emphasized practical training, including a hands-on session on assistive devices and resource technologies, concluding with a heartfelt acknowledgment by the organizing team.
