Background
Gangesh, a 9-year-old boy from Nankari, Sitapur, was born with a congenital cataract in both eyes. Although he underwent surgery, he continued to struggle with reduced vision. This made everyday activities, especially at school, incredibly challenging for him. He found it difficult to recognize faces, read the board in class, and engage in activities that required clear vision. His parents noticed that he was having trouble reading and completing his school assignments, which further affected his academic performance and social interactions.
Initial Assessment at Sitapur Eye Hospital
To better understand his condition, Gangesh was taken to Sitapur Eye Hospital for a detailed eye examination. The results revealed that his vision was severely impaired, with a visual acuity of 3/60 in the right eye and 2/60 in the left eye. His near vision was measured at N24 in both eyes, classifying him as legally blind. He underwent a comprehensive low vision evaluation at the Sitapur Vision-Aid resource centre.
Challenges Identified
Gangesh faced several challenges due to his poor vision:
- Near Vision Tasks: He struggled significantly with reading, writing, and other detailed
activities.
- Social Impact: Gangesh often felt isolated because he couldn’t easily recognize friends or participate in group activities.
- Educational Barriers: He needed large-print books and assistive technology to keep up with his studies.
Intervention
To help Gangesh, with the support of Vision-Aid, the Resource Center provided him with magnifiers in spectacle form designed to assist with near vision tasks. These spectacles offered the magnification he needed to read and do other close-up activities. Additionally, a letter was given to his parents to request to the school that Gangesh be allowed to sit in the front row in class making it easier for him to see the board.
Impact and Improvements
1. Academic Success:
- Reading Ability: Gangesh quickly adapted to his new glasses, experiencing a significant improvement in his reading skills. He could now read books on his own and participate in class without solely relying on large-print materials.
- Improved Concentration: The glasses reduced the strain on his eyes, allowing him to focus better and for longer periods, which greatly improved his concentration on schoolwork.
- Increased Confidence: With his enhanced ability to read and complete his academic work, Gangesh’s confidence grew.
Gangesh’s journey shows the difference that tailored interventions can make in the life of a child with visual challenges. Thanks to Vision-Aid and the Sitapur Resource Center, Gangesh now has the tools he needs to thrive academically and socially.
