Meet Kolichalam Uma, a determined individual from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Uma was born visually impaired due to retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that has posed significant challenges throughout her life. Despite these obstacles, she has emerged as a source of inspiration for many.
Uma completed her schooling at the Blind and Deaf Special Residential School, where she faced numerous hurdles, including a lack of resources and awareness. However, with the guidance and support of those around her, she persevered and successfully achieved her academic goals. She earned her BA degree from Pratibha Degree College under GITAM University and later completed a diploma in special education.
In 2021, Uma learned about Vision-Aid, an organization dedicated to empowering visually impaired individuals through specialized training programs. Encouraged by a friend, she enrolled in their IBPS training course. The training proved transformative, equipping her with essential skills and the confidence to appear for government exams.
Through hard work and dedication, Uma achieved her dream of becoming a government-appointed primary school teacher for special education in Telangana. Reflecting on her journey, Uma says, “The training at Vision-Aid was very helpful. The organization was incredibly encouraging, and the trainers were supportive even after the course ended. Their post-training guidance helped me apply for various jobs, and I am deeply grateful for their assistance.”
