Overcoming Early Challenges
Born with birth eye defects that cannot be corrected through medical or surgical means, Nagajothi grew up facing visual challenges with remarkable courage. Her greatest strength came from her parents, whose unwavering love and belief in her potential inspired her to chase her dreams fearlessly. From childhood, they instilled in her the confidence to rise above every obstacle and embrace education as the key to independence.
Training at the Vision-Aid Resource Center
Having been evaluated at the Sankara Nethralaya Vision-Aid Resource Center since childhood, Ms. Nagajothi revisited the center with renewed hope of finding ways to lead a more independent life. During this visit, she received Orientation and Mobility training, along with counselling on various vision rehabilitation measures and educational guidance. She was also trained in using a mobile phone, which became a valuable assistive device that helped her explore and learn various applications with ease.
A Smartphone That Sparked Independence
Despite her achievements, learning independently remained a challenge. Without a personal device, Nagajothi had to borrow her father’s phone to access assistive applications like Talk Back, High Q MP3, Lookout, Lazarillo, and WhatsApp. She creatively recorded her textbooks and listened to them repeatedly to revise her lessons. Recognizing her determination, the Vision-Aid Resource Center at Sankara Nethralaya supported her with a smartphone of her own. For Nagajothi, this was more than just a gadget—it became a gateway to independence, enabling her to study confidently, use apps freely, and manage her daily activities without depending on others.
With heartfelt gratitude, she shared, “This phone will be very useful for my studies and will help me become independent.”
Academic Brilliance Against the Odds
Until her 10th standard, she studied at CSI School for the Blind, where she laid a strong academic foundation. With confidence, she transitioned to a mainstream school for higher secondary education at CSI Higher Secondary School, Irenipuram, a small village in Kanyakumari district. Her hard work paid off—she secured top marks and emerged first in her school in both her 10th and 12th board examinations.
Empowered with Computer Training and a Laptop
Determined to enhance her skills, Nagajothi enrolled in computer training at the resource center, where she learned basic computer operations. After completing her schooling, she joined a B.A. History program at a regular arts college in Kanyakumari district. Impressed by her dedication, Vision-Aid provided her with a laptop to aid in her higher education. With it, she can now save lessons, type assignments, and access online resources—skills essential for her academic growth. She also plans to pursue computer courses after graduation and aspires to appear for the UPSC examinations to fulfill her dream of becoming an IAS officer.
