Here is an update from the Vision-Aid National Resource Center at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. The Aravind team and their commitment to providing the highest quality care with compassion and commitment, is beyond amazing.
Camp for special school Children:
194 children from 6 schools for children with special needs were screened during the months of January to March 2019. 54 children had refractive error and provided spectacles. 33 children studying in the special school for the blind were provided low vision magnification devices. Children studying in special school for the blind were taught orientation and mobility and provided training with special software. Children in the special school for the mentally challenged were also screened for vision and recommended with different strategies based on the functional vision assessment with each intervention being customized to suit the child’s needs.
Computer Training:
Computer training has been provided for 20 people with visual impairment during this quarter (January to March 2019) at the Vision-Aid Centre, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. These patients learned to use Non-Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) software and to work Microsoft word and Excel. Each patient spent 7 hours in a day with the trainer. Each patient completed 5 days training. They were provided teaching material like NVDA manual and our staff guided them to download the special software for use in their own computers for continued learning.
Orientation & Mobility:
The basic mobility technique with white cane was taught to 27 people with profound visual impairment at Vision rehabilitation Centre, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai.
Vision Enhancement programs:
22 children with profound visual impairment were enrolled in the vision enhancement clinic in the Vision-Aid center, Aravind Eye Hospital Madurai.
Low vision Devices:
40 patients with visual impairment were provided low vision devices under this project. The comprehensive low vision assessment was completed by the optometrist / Rehabilitationist, and the needed person was provided low vision devises (Optical / Non-optical Devices) at the low vision screening clinic, Visio-Aid center, Aravind Eye hospital Madurai
