Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of childhood blindness in India. In a significant step toward addressing this challenge, Vision-Aid has partnered with the esteemed LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) to establish a specialized CVI Resource Center in Bhubaneswar. This initiative aims to provide critical support to children and infants across the broader Odisha region, including rural and urban communities.
The establishment of this center was made possible through the generous support of Manorama Choudhury and Bhaskar Panigrahi, whose contributions have helped create a dedicated space for early intervention and rehabilitation for children with CVI.
Inauguration of the Manorama Choudhury Nayan Jyoti Vision-Aid CVI Resource Centre
The inauguration ceremony took place on February 19, 2025, at the Mithu Tulsi Chanrai Campus, LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Patia, Bhubaneswar. The event marked a major milestone in advancing support for children with CVI and was attended by several distinguished guests.
Among the dignitaries present were Professor Damodar Acharya, retired director of IIT Kharagpur, and Mr. Sanyasi Behera, Odisha’s first visually impaired civil service officer. Families, parents, and direct beneficiaries of the initiative were also part of the gathering, highlighting the deep impact of this project on the community.
Program Highlights
The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Srikant Kumar Sahu, who introduced the comprehensive eye care services available at the Mithu Tulsi Chanrai Campus.
Following this, Dr. Debasmita Majhi spoke about the transformative rehabilitation services provided at the center, emphasizing their impact on individuals in need. Dr. Beula Christy further elaborated on the importance of early intervention in CVI, stressing the critical role such initiatives play in supporting children with cortical visual impairment.
A particularly moving moment came when a parent shared their personal experiences, highlighting the challenges faced by families and the profound difference structured support can make in the lives of children with CVI.

The official launch of the CVI Resource Center was marked by a ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolizing hope and progress. Following this, children with special needs took center stage in a heartwarming cultural performance, showcasing their talents and resilience.
Guest of Honor Mr. Sanyasi Behera addressed the gathering, speaking about the long-term impact of this initiative on the Odia community and the importance of continued support for children with visual impairments.
