Vision-Aid Strengthens Access to Vision Rehabilitation for Children in Arani

Bringing Comprehensive Low Vision Care, Assistive Devices, and Rehabilitation Support Closer to Children

The Vision-Aid Resource Center at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, conducted a comprehensive school-based outreach camp at Arani Blind School, Tamil Nadu, bringing specialized eye care, low vision assessment, and vision rehabilitation services closer to children with visual impairment.

The multidisciplinary team included Pediatric Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, and rehabilitation professionals, who worked together to understand and address the students’ individual visual and functional needs. A total of 49 students received comprehensive services during the camp.

Comprehensive Assessment and Personalized Support

Each student underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination, low vision assessment, and functional vision and rehabilitation evaluation. Based on their individual needs, appropriate optical, non-optical, and electronic low vision devices were identified, prescribed, and dispensed during the camp.

Students and teachers also received counselling and hands-on guidance on the effective use of these devices. This practical support aimed to help students make better use of their available vision in the classroom and during everyday activities.

Strengthening Access to Vision Rehabilitation

School-based outreach programmes plays an important role in making low vision care and rehabilitation services more accessible to children who may otherwise face challenges in accessing specialized services.

By identifying their visual needs, providing appropriate assistive devices, and equipping students and teachers with the knowledge and skills to use them effectively, the Vision-Aid outreach programme supports improved functional vision, greater classroom participation, and increased independence.

Continuing Support Beyond the Camp

The support does not end with the outreach camp. The Vision-Aid Resource Center team will continue to provide follow-up support to monitor students’ progress and address their evolving visual and rehabilitation needs.

Through continued collaboration with schools, regular follow-up, and access to appropriate assistive solutions, Vision-Aid remains committed to bringing low vision and vision rehabilitation services closer to children who need them most.

The Arani outreach camp is another step toward creating more accessible learning environments where children can develop their abilities, participate more fully, and pursue their educational journey with greater confidence.
